Monday Meals: Iron & Your Wee One

So in lieu of an actual meal, I decided to do some research on foods that are good sources of iron.  However, you should note that if your baby is still breastfeeding, breastfeeding is a really good source of iron.

Jax just had his one year check up and was a little low in iron (just barely – .1% lower than “normal).  We are starting to phase out breastfeeding, so I’m not sure if that is the cause.  Typically people think iron comes mainly from meat, which is what my pediatrician suggested I add more of to his diet.  Meat is also a great source of protein, which is doubly important for your babies developing mind and body.

Jax isn’t really into meat (we try to include a meat option at every meal, but getting him to eat it is another issue altogether).  Yes, I’ve got a somewhat vegetarian child.  I wonder if this has to do with my mostly vegetarian diet when I was pregnant?  Well here are some websites with lists of high iron foods and explanations of the benefits of iron:

http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/Iron.htm  (also has a list of how much iron your child should be getting and at what age – I love these types of list.  They aren’t always easy to find.)

http://kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/iron/)

http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/dietary-sources-of-iron-for-vegetarians.html

I didn’t want to copy and paste a huge long list, sorry . . . it just seemed redundant.  The important thing to note is there are two types of iron – heme (protein/meat foods) and non-heme (plant foods).  Adding foods with Vitamin C into the meal with iron rich foods will aid the absorbtion of iron, especially with non-heme (plant) foods.  Non- heme foods are where we get most of our iron, but it doesn’t absorb as easily as  heme foods do.  Here are some sources of Vitamin C rich foods:

  • Citrus
  • Berries
  • Green Veggies (broccoli & cabbage)
  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Tomatoes

The non-heme foods that I’ve been trying to incorporate into his diet are:

  • Spinach- freshly steamed and added to a smoothie that has a berry or peaches (Vitamin C rich food), we usually have a smoothie at snack time or as part of one of his meals
  • Beans- he likes black and pinto especially.
  • Oatmeal – about every other day for breakfast
  • Quinoa

I normally include a heme type food, but like I said, he usually won’t eat those.  I include it so that at least he tries it, since they are good sources of iron that aren’t as hard to absorb as non-heme.

Take a look at the list provided in the links.  For me,  I was able to realize, yeah I am providing lots of foods with iron, but here are some other ones that are higher in iron that I could include more often so that I can increase his iron.

Just wanted to share this with you if your little one has the same issue!  Or keep doing what your doing if they don’t!

Hope you had a great Monday!

Fashion Friday OR Friday Wants: Boys of Summer

Ok – so I confess, I didn’t have time to do the Fashion Friday shoot this week.  Plus, my photographer is gone for the week (Europe – lucky gal).  So I did something a little like Wednesday Wants: I collected a spattering of cool summer inspired boys items both clothing and toys.  I’ll share with you my favorite boy clothing items, since it is Fashion Friday.

Riding a bike always reminds me of summer.  Something about the feeling of the wind in your face, and feeling like a free spirit.  Both of these items are perfect for summer.

riding a bike always reminds me of summer.

make sure to check out her other cute shirts. it was a toss between this one and amo.

This shirt reminds me of wearing an aquarium, which I have this deep excitement to take Jax to one.  He’s always enthralled with fish tanks whenever we see them.

This would be perfect for the beach, not to mention the fact that I love stripes.

And of course you’ll need this for the beach when you go there:

I’m not sure why, but I’m really digging sharks as a fashion trend for little boys this summer.  Maybe that’s always the case.

Make sure to check out all of the other cute etsy summer items I choose on our list.  There are lot of cute items out there that are made with love, and by hand.

Hopefully I’ll be back in full Fashion Friday swing next week!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Fashion Friday: Celebration!

It’s Fashion Friday!

We are all dressed up for my little sister’s graduation!  Master’s that is.  They had the graduation in downtown Phoenix and then we went and celebrated later a Gallo Blanco.

I’m wearing a blue and white striped top I bought at forever 21, a black sequin pencil skirt, sandals, and Jeannie Richard band ring and earrings  (the one’s in our giveaway!).  The band ring and earrings are made out of beads and are super fun for dressing up.  They are all black, except the earrings have some gold beads in them.  They are a nice addition to any outfit, not just a semi-dressy one. (If you like them go and buy a pair at Jeannie Richard because they’re having a Post-FAB 25% sale till May 31, code POSTFAB25 at checkout).

On Jax, black gap pants, and blue babies-r-us polo he got from his auntie (the one I mentioned about the graduation and celebration at Gallo Blanco) the four above pics were taken at Gallo Blanco, out back in their pool area.  It’s a very retro, older style hotel.  The food is this amazing, fresh southwestern style food.  I would love to go back and stay there some time or take more pictures!  In their pool area they have a waterfall glass wall that runs almost the length of the pool area.  It’s really beautiful.

Don’t forget to enter our mother’s day giveaway for a chance to win all of our mother’s day’s goodies, plus these ones that I’m wearing in the pictures!

Hope you all have an amazing mother’s day!  I know I will no matter what it is as long as it involves my son!

ENJOY! ash

Fashion Friday: Jax Birthday Preview

It’s Fashion Friday!

We’re really excited to share these pics with you.  We got some really cute items in for this particular shoot from Teesies and Casanees.  Part of what makes this shoot particularly special is that next week is Jax’s first birthday (May 1st, a May day baby).  So we took these pics in prep for his very cool party that is going to happen – and in true toddler fashion it’s Elmo/Sesame Street themed.  Yes, he’s grown to have a true appreciation for everything Elmo and Sesame Street.  What can I say, they are enduring and so much more exciting than when I was growing up.  I don’t remember such cool songs as this Fiest one, or this Jason Mraz one, try Bruno Mars, Adam Sandler, and so many more . . . Jax has a true love for music and now he dances and jives like there is no tomorrow – it’s so much fun watching.

Well anyway, back to our cool shoot for his birthday invite, which you can find on our sister site – Intowee (you can purchase the invites there also, but we’re currently getting that site up and running, it’s a little in the newbie stage).  We got this adorable onesie from Teesies, it says “What would Elmo do?”  So appropriate . . .

And these plaid suspenders!  I just about died when I saw them, and thought those are sooo Jax (well I guess they are so mom, since I’m the one that dresses him – although Meg was the one who found them!).  Too cute.

And one of these items will be part of big birthday week next week, and will be going in a giveaway… you’ll just have to check back with us or subscribe to our blog if to find out more!

have a great weekend and stay tuned into our blog for more awesome birthday/sesame street bash ideas, inspiration, and giveaway.

FASHION FRIDAY (mommy & me): Ash & Jax Roosevelt Murals

It’s FASHION FRIDAY!

PART II Of Roosevelt Murals

&

SPONSOR LOVE

We headed back down to Roosevelt to take some more shots with the murals down in that area.  Since it’s one of the art districts in Phoenix, the murals come and go before you know it sometimes.  So you really have to catch them quick.  I absolutely love this southwestern inspired one, which I felt would be perfect for some southwestern inspired accessories.

I just go these earrings from one of our sponsors!  Persophone’s Place!  I absolutely love them.  They are supper long and beaded.  They go with just about everything I own . . . I have fairly simple outfits and when you have such a cool pair of statement piece earrings, sometimes it’s great to tone down the other parts of your outfit (in my opinion).  She’s has shorter versions if you prefer!

Unfortunately, I rarely get to wear them right now . . . Jax LOVES it when I wear dangly earrings.  And my ears LOVE it when he pulls them too (insert dripping sarcasm here)!  I get to wear them at least once a week when I’m working and he’s hanging out with his dad on his day off.

This dinosaur mural is across the way from the southwestern one.  Its so cute!  Feels really funky and I believe it’s spray painted on.

By this time, jax was starting to loose it and get super squirmy.  He wants to be off running around (although he hasn’t quite figured out the walking/running part, but he can sure book it in a crawl).

I’m wearing forever21 top and tank (man – forever21 is SO affordable, $5 tank tops), H&M pants, Target ballet flats in a cool bright colored southwestern pattern, thrifted jewelry, and you can get my fantastic earring here – at Persephone’s Place.

on jax: thrifted Jack & Jill gray linen shorts, and thrifted vintage yellow polo shirt.

hope you enjoyed Fashion Friday!  check out the cool murals around Phoenix when your in town.

have a great weekend! ash
